Once a month a group of students get together for jazz instruction with David Friesen. Unlike private lessons, this is a chance to learn how to play with a group. How to listen...how to lead...how to accompany.
Cost: $50 for the session.
Who: You don't have to be a student of David's, but you should have practiced the pieces listed below. Be familiar with the form, changes and the melody (including drummers!). Some other tips are here. Contact Mark if you're unsure.
Place: 975 NW Torrey View Lane Portland 97229.
Basic directions from the east side are: Hwy 26 west, take Barnes Ave exit just before Hwy 217, right at light at end of exit, then right at next light which is Barnes Ave. Go on Barnes to 4th light, make left here at SW Leahy Rd, stay on Leahy until first stop sign, make right turn on NW 90th Ave and go till next stop sign, make right turn there onto NW Leahy Terrace. Go about 300ft till road ends and make left turn onto NW Torrey View Lane, and in another 100ft veer left to stay on Torrey View Ln. Go to end of cul-du-sac, last house straight back at end is 975, blue house. Driveway is large so please feel free to park in driveway or on street, your choice.
(If using a GPS device don’t let it take you via Miller to Ash St. There is a barrier on Ash, you can’t get through. You can only get there via Barnes or Cornell)

What to expect
- You should be able to confidently play a blues progression in either Bb or F.

- Private lessons with David Friesen aren't necessary - but you'll be happier if you do. Private lessons build up to ensemble training, and you'll be using what you learned in your 1x1 sessions with Dave in the ensemble sessions.
- Another advantage to private lessons is that Dave will do duets with you privately, so you know what to expect in the group.
- Cost is $50. Bring cash or check made out to David Friesen
- Please arrive early enough to allow for setup BEFORE we start.
- Eat before you come, or after. We won't be serving food. We do have water, and usually coffee
- All instruments are welcome
Quotes from past attendees
"Provides the essential knowledge and understanding of jazz and music itself" - Corey Heppner
"While David is a world class musician, he is very open to students on all levels. He has the gift of finding areas for imporvement for each individual that are always on target. He provides gentle guidance for an ensemble on how to work together better.
Follow his advice, and the music becomes nice.
The relaxed atmosphere at Marks home is very comfortable. Each experience is memorable and I will strive to learn what is taught." -Munroe Denham
